Daniel Chernilo es doctor en Sociología por la Universidad de Warwick en el Reino Unido (2004) y Licenciado en Sociología por la Universidad de Chile (1997). Hasta 2017, fue Profesor Titular de Pensamiento Social y Político de la Universidad de Loughborough y en la actualidad es aún profesor visitante de esa universidad. Además, ha sido profesor visitante en las Universidades de Sídney en Australia, Masaryk en la República Checa, Guanajuato en México y Juiz de Fora en Brasil. Es miembro de los consejos editoriales internacionales de diversas revistas académicas, como British Journal of Sociology, European Journal of Social Theory y Social Epistemology.

Es autor de 7 libros y más de 75 artículos y capítulos de libros. Sus líneas de investigación son la teoría sociológica clásica y contemporánea, debates relativos a la secularización la era axial y el antisemitismo, el Antropoceno, el nacionalismo y el cosmopolitismo.
