Germán Manríquez

During his graduate and postgraduate studies GERMÁN MANRÍQUEZ (GM) received training in Biology and Genetics and Evolutionary Biology and Morphometrics, in Ukraine and Chile, respectively. After studying microevolutionary changes occuring in endemic populations of Insecta (Drosophila genus, mesophragmatica group) and Rodentia (Phyllotis sp.), GM devoted himself to the study of patterns of biocultural evolution of Chilean pre-Hispanic populations with emphasis on the biological consequences of intentional cranial deformation using geometric morphometrics tools. As a result of these studies, GM has constructed a database with the photographic, radiographic and 3D coordinates landmark data registering of nearly two thousand skulls representative of pre-Hispanic populations from Northern, Central and Southern Chile. Currently, GM has pioneered in the linking of scientists from different disciplines, institutions and countries to collaborate in the analysis of the biocultural evolution of pre-Hispanic populations from Atacama Oases [chemists, geologists, archaeologists and physical anthropologists from Chile (Universidad de Chile, Archaeological Museum San Pedro de Atacama), France (Musèe de l'Homme) and UK (University of Cambridge)]. After moving from Faculty of Medicine to Faculty of Dentistry, GM has created and is in charge of the Center of Quantitative Analysis in Dental Anthropology (CA2). The main research line of CA2 is to asses the polulational fenotype of living and prehistoric Chilean populations. In orden to complain this task, CA2 applies linear and geometric morphometric approaches as well as standard and circular statistics.
